Clearly a hat and not a whip. Looks like a whip a bit, but really isn't.

//total whiteness

Has some GAZ-like traits, but more like the later GAZ (so not). Not a Krupp, not a Blitz, Benz L doesn't have the right fenders...

Found a forum thread.

Seems like the consensus is that it's a modified Mercedes

That's kind of what I'd been thinking. Predecessor to the Benz L-series, all of which have hoods too high. Here's an L1500 command car:

Early photo. Early-mid 1920s ... maybe after being release from prison? Hard to call the car without seeing the grill so I'll just guess "Opel."

Here's a '33 Benz G3a command car - if not it, closely related.

I'd thought Opel as well, but further looking left me quite convinced it's a Benz. That, and Leadbull's forum link. The 20's Benz trucks I have found pictures of use that style of stamped fender, and there's too much similarity to the 1930-ish Benz G3 series truck to ignore. The Opel lines run completely around the styling seen here, flirting briefly with a car look before becoming the Blitz we all know so well.

The G3a's immediate predecessor would probably have been built out of a Benz 8/38 (produced '26-'28) or the commercial version the L 3/4. The one in the pic may be older still, but is certainly related.

That's one of the worst Charlie Chaplin lookalikes I've ever seen....

And it looks more like a light truck than a car.

I believe he owned or had use of a Mercedes 28/95 in the 1920s. This one looks like it has some kind of cover over the radiator hiding the V-shape.

There are huge variations in body styles and fender shapes over the years as many of these were coachbuilt.

Why is Charlie Chaplan standing next to such a weird car?
